Bits and Bobs

4.26.2014
  1. Started watching Suits almost two weeks ago due to the pilot that was aired on Dutch television and it is safe to say I am hooked. One season down and two still to go.
  2. Ever since I finished my last exams I have not been able to willingly get out of bed before 11:30. It's insane. Will have to work on this. NOW.
  3. Am set on making an ice cream cake for which I received the recipe Sunday. The instructions seem really easy and my parents already had it and thought it was delicious so now I want to make it as well. Will keep you posted.
  4. Just a couple more days before I am  off to see Panic! At The Disco with Bonnie. When it was announced a couple of months ago that they were coming to the Netherlands I really wanted to go but thought I didn't have anyone to go along with. That's until my friend asked me if I wanted to go a couple of weeks ago. I am readyy to gooooo Excited? YES.
  5. Last Sunday an item was on the radio about the book I had to read for my bachelor thesis. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson is a wondrous tale of the life of centenarian Allan Karlsson. On his 100th birthday he decides to climb out of the window of the old folk's home he lives in simply because he cannot be bothered. The book depicts two storylines, one of Allan's past and his present day adventure as he flees his birthday celebration. When I had to read this international best-seller it was already set to be adapted into a film. Via the radio I suddenly heard that it will be out soon here in the Netherlands and I'm looking forward to see how it turned out. The story is somewhat in a Forrest Gump-like style with lots of mockery, history, adventure, and humour. The idea of someone who has lived an entire century is taken up in all its forms within this story. I enjoyed reading it and in fact probably could have written my entire thesis about this book so if you're interested go read the book or check the film when it is out.

The roaring twenties

4.21.2014
Some time ago, a friend of mine (Emma) announced that we had to invest in twenties attire for something special: her birthday. Already excited by the idea of dressing up I looked for inspiration and spent quite some extra time on Pinterest and YouTube. Thanks to the film The Great Gatsby there was plenty of inspiration to find. Saturday it was on - a party consisting of food and fancy drinks.

Luckily, I already had two dresses I could borrow from my mom that would suit the twenties vibe. With one beige flapper dress and a black sequined one, I opted for the last and had my prom heels on the only heels I seem to be able to walk on and glitter-lined tights. Of course, I could not miss out on the headband WITH feathers and coupled it with a long necklace with white feathers, a bracelet and simple but fancy looking earrings. As for my face, I opted for dark eyes with fake lashes and a dark red lip. Normally, I do not have that much trouble with sticking the lashes, but these were a pain in the ass. Probably because of the rhinestones attached to them making them heavier and thus less inclined to stay put. For my hair I used the tutorial below although I was afraid I had not enough bobby pins.

Revlon Colorburst

4.12.2014

As stated in this little post of mine I stumbled upon a market stall at the annual St. Joep market in Sittard with make up products and one brand in particular caught my eye - Revlon. I have heard so many great things about this make up brand and recently found that some of it is sold at a shop called Big Bazar. Maybe it is not the current collection but who cares, I finally can get my hands upon some of its products. The stall had a special offer for 2 for 5 euros on the displayed lipsticks resulting in four newly purchased Revlon Colorbursts.

The four I got consist of one of the Revlon Colorburst Lipstick collection, in 045 Raspberry, and three of the Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter collection, in 096 Macaroon, 025 Peach Parfait, and 010 Raspberry Pie. I was mostly looking at the shades and did not realize until later what cute names the four items had as well as the fact that I had two named Raspberry.

Here you can see the swatches I did in the same order as the pictures above: 045 Raspberry, 096 Macaroon, 025 Peach Parfait, and 010 Raspberry Pie. You can see that although I have two named Raspberry they have a very different colour to them. The Colorburst lipstick is more of a red whereas the lip butter is more of a fuchsia pink. Then there is Macaroon, a warm pink colour, and peach parfait which is the sheerest of the four with a slightly pinkish-peach tint to it.

The Colorburst lipstick has a light sheen to it and goes on smoothly thanks to the waxes and almond oil. However, because of the smoothness of the lipstick it is not as highly pigmented as a normal lipstick when applying one layer.

The Lip Butters look like a lipstick but go on as smoothly as a balm and have the same texture and feel to it on the lips. The ingredients includes mango, shea butter and coconut oil, resulting in its balmy feel. The lasting power is not as long as a lipstick, but in my experience is stays on longer than a balm. I have been popping a different colour on my lips every day and I really really like them. It is a nice addition for the spring and summer times with a range of different bright colours.

I hope I run into this stall, if not a similar one, again so that I can get more colours of these and even check out other products of this brand. Do you have any of the Revlon Colorburst collection? What shades do you think I should check out?

Done?!

4.09.2014
Hello!

In case you noticed yes I have been a bit absent on my blog these past couple of weeks. I was full-time stressing, procrastinating, and messing up my sleep routine if I had any to begin with because I was dealing with my exams. My last exams. These were due last Friday along with my last tutorial for which I had to prepare a presentation. My last class. It all sounds so absurd to me. Whilst I still have a thesis to research, read and write for I am actually done with going to classes, preparing and making exams. How weird...

Before I started to work on my final exams I had made a promise to myself to take at least one full week off from anything school-related. That is now. So far, I have been watching series and films, alone or with my mom, and have been on the Internet. In that respect, nothing has changed. I also still feel that this is not possible. Although I didn't have that many classes over the years compared to... well almost everyone, I still had a lot of stuff to do for the classes I had. It has added to my discipline as well as my skills in procrastination.

In relation to that - The utmost procrastination tool last week was the game 2048. A game I played in a doge-version, doctor who edition, the standard game online and I now also downloaded the app on my phone. Yes, it's safe to say I'm hooked. I blame my friends.

Thus far, I am still in denial I suppose. Yes, I have had the occasional what-are-you-going-to-do-when you-are-done question and seriously I don't know. I guess try to find work within the field of my study as any person is trying to do once they are done with a phase in life that has pretty much been all their life. Oh yes, I foresee many nights thinking about this when I should be sleeping, but for the moment I don't want to. With a thesis on the way I still have plenty of work to do before it really is all over which is just fine by me. Hopefully, something will cross my path or at least I will figure something out. For now, I just want to let it all sink in and actually enjoy the free time I have without worrying about anything at all.

Bagels!

4.01.2014

I already warned you for this one so here it is... Bagels!

I absolutely love bagels and can still remember the first time I either had bagels or at least the first time where I had ones made up of different ingredients and with different flavours. It was the first time I went to Brussels with a friend of mine and her mom for two days and our breakfast on the second day was made up of bagels.

Anyways, two Saturdays ago a couple of my friends and I went to a little place called Bagels&Beans in Sittard for a nice lunch. We hardly do lunches together so this was really nice and most of them if not all had not been to Bagels&Beans before. They sure were in for a treat.

It was really crowded and we sat with the five of us at a small round table. It was not optimal but we managed pretty well with our skills, ahum. After receiving the menu we actually spent quite some time on figuring out what to get, there were just SO MANY things that we wanted to try out. For that reason alone, it was already a success and I can see us coming back to this place, if not together then individually.

I was smart enough to look at the menu at home the day before so I already had a few things in mind. When it was time to order, my first decision wasn't available any more - a special bagel with smoked chicken, avocado, basil dressing, pine nuts and lettuce - so that means a rain check! I then opted for the warm mushroom-burger 'everything' bagel with parmigiano reggiano, truffle mayonnaise, pine nuts and lettuce. Are you hungry yet? Sorry! Of course I chose tea (I love tea) as my drink to go along with it and this one was pomegranate-mint tea. It's obvious to say that I loved what I had chosen. I was intrigued by the mushroom-burger and I will take it again. Hmm...

Guess what? A couple days later I happen to be in Heerlen and went to the Bagels&Beans there with my mom, brother and sister and this time I did have the bagel with smoked chicken. Did not think I would have the opportunity to try it that soon. It was delicious, although I do think I prefer the warm bagel one I had in Sittard.
